Iran warns of any fresh attacks would be ‘another failure’

(MENAFN) Iran cautioned on Thursday that any renewed assault on its territory would backfire, following comments from the UN nuclear watchdog chief expressing concern about a potential “renewed use of force” if diplomatic efforts falter.

The warning came months after Israel’s large-scale air campaign against Iran in mid-June, which ignited a 12-day conflict marked by Iranian missile and drone retaliation. The fighting saw Israel strike military, nuclear, and residential sites, with the United States later joining in attacks on key nuclear facilities. A ceasefire between Iran and Israel has been in place since June 24.

In an interview with a Swiss newspaper, IAEA head Rafael Grossi said, “If diplomacy fails, I fear a renewed use of force.”

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi questioned whether Grossi’s remarks were made “out of concern or as a threat,” warning that “those who issue such threats must understand that repeating a failed experience will only lead to another failure.”

Relations between Tehran and the IAEA have been tense since the war, after Iran suspended cooperation with the agency, accusing it of staying silent on Israeli and US attacks. Although a new cooperation framework was reached in September, Tehran later declared it void after Britain, France, and Germany reimposed UN sanctions that had been lifted under the 2015 nuclear deal—a pact undermined by the US withdrawal in 2018.

Grossi noted that since the conflict, Iran has restricted inspections, citing security concerns, and now only allows limited access to its nuclear sites. The IAEA has reported that Iran is the only non-nuclear-armed nation enriching uranium to 60 percent, close to weapons-grade levels.

“If it were to take the next steps, Iran would have enough material for around 10 nuclear bombs,” Grossi said, though he added that there is no evidence Tehran is pursuing nuclear weapons.
