Provided by AGP"Swiss authorities have confirmed a case of #hantavirus identified in a passenger from the MV Hondius cruise ship," WHO announced on US social media company X.
As stated by reports, the infected man is currently receiving treatment at a hospital in Zurich after seeking medical care following an alert email sent by the cruise operator to passengers regarding a health incident.
The Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH), cited by Swissinfo, said the patient had recently returned from a trip to South Africa with his wife in late April after traveling on the MV Hondius.
According to reports, the man’s wife has shown no symptoms but has entered precautionary self-isolation while health officials investigate potential contacts linked to the case.
Authorities are also working to trace possible exposure routes and determine whether others may have been affected.
The FOPH said additional infections in Switzerland are considered unlikely and assessed the overall public health risk as low.
